Home » Why I Believe Travel Planning Should Be Personal, Not Transactional

Let me ask you something.

When was the last time a website asked how you were doing before it booked your flight?

When did an algorithm stop to find out that you are celebrating 10 years of choosing each other every single day — and that this trip needs to be more than just a vacation? When did a booking platform remember that you have a food allergy, that your partner hates long layovers, or that you have been dreaming about this honeymoon since before you even had a ring on your finger?

The answer, of course, is never. Because booking sites are not designed to know you. They are designed to process you.

And that is exactly why I do what I do.

“Travel is one of the most personal investments you will ever make. It deserves to be treated that way.”

The Difference Between a Transaction and an Experience

There is nothing wrong with booking a flight online when you are flying home for the holidays. Convenience has its place. But when you are planning a honeymoon, a destination wedding, an anniversary trip, a milestone celebration — or any journey that carries real emotional weight — a transaction is not enough.

A transaction gives you a confirmation number.

An experience gives you a memory you will carry for the rest of your life.

I have been in travel long enough to know the difference between the two — and I have seen what happens when people choose the wrong one. I have heard from couples who booked their honeymoon through a website and arrived to a hotel that had no record of their reservation. I have talked to travelers who paid for a “luxury” all-inclusive that looked nothing like the photos online. I have spoken with LGBTQ+ couples who showed up to a destination that was not remotely as welcoming as the listing suggested.

These are not just inconveniences. They are moments that should have been magical, now marked by stress, disappointment, and the sinking feeling that something important was lost.

That is what happens when travel becomes transactional.

Real Question, Real Answer What does a travel advisor actually do that a booking site cannot? A travel advisor builds a relationship with you before a single hotel is booked. They ask about your travel style, your budget priorities, your must-haves, and your dealbreakers. They research destinations with your specific needs in mind — including accessibility, LGBTQ+ safety, dietary requirements, and more. They are your advocate before, during, and after your trip. And when something goes wrong — and travel is unpredictable — they are the person on the other end of the phone actually solving the problem.

Why I Built My Practice Around People, Not Packages

I did not become a travel advisor to sell packages. I became one because I genuinely love people — and I love what travel does for them.

I have watched travel change couples. I have seen it restore marriages, celebrate survival, mark new beginnings, and honor loved ones. Travel is rarely just about the destination. It is almost always about the moment in life you are in when you decide to go.

When a couple comes to me, I am not thinking about which resort has the best commission rate. I am thinking: What does this trip need to be for them? What does this moment in their lives call for? What would make them come home and say — that was exactly what we needed?

That kind of thinking cannot be automated. It requires conversation, relationship, and the kind of genuine investment in someone else’s happiness that no algorithm has ever been able to replicate.

“Your trip is not a transaction to be processed. It is a chapter of your story — and it deserves to be planned like one.”

What Personal Travel Planning Actually Looks Like

Here is what working with a travel advisor who is genuinely invested in you looks like in practice:

  • Your first conversation is not about booking. It is about you — your relationship, your vision, your budget, and what success looks like for this trip.
  • Your advisor researches destinations with your specific needs in mind — not just what is popular or profitable, but what is right for you.
  • If you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, your advisor knows which destinations are genuinely welcoming and which ones are not — and they will never book you somewhere that puts your safety or comfort at risk.
  • Your advisor handles the logistics — flights, hotels, transfers, excursions, special requests — so you never have to spend your honeymoon in a browser tab.
  • If something goes sideways — a flight cancellation, a room that is not what was promised, a vendor issue — your advisor is the one who makes it right. You are not navigating a 1-800 number alone.
  • After you return, your advisor follows up. Because the relationship does not end when the trip does.

That is not what a booking site offers. That is what a relationship offers.

The Couples I am Most Honored to Serve

I serve couples from all walks of life — but I have a particular heart for those who have not always seen themselves reflected in travel spaces.

LGBTQ+ couples planning destination weddings or honeymoons. Couples celebrating anniversaries after years of putting everyone else first. First-time international travelers who are nervous and need someone to make the unknown feel manageable. Couples who have experienced loss and are using travel to heal and reclaim joy.

These are not just clients to me. They are people in real moments of their lives — and I take that seriously.

My agency, Illusionz Travel, was built from the beginning around the belief that every traveler deserves to feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for — not processed. That philosophy shapes everything we do, from how we conduct consultations to how we select the vendors and destinations we recommend.

Did You Know? Illusionz Travel is LGBTQ+ Romance Travel Specialist certified, LGBTQ+ Wedding Certified through the Equality Institute, a DWHSA Member, an IGLTA Member, and BBB Accredited. We are proud to serve all couples with the same level of excellence, care, and joy.

Why I Will Never Apologize for Being Relationship-Driven

There is a version of this industry that treats travel like a commodity — something to be sold as fast as possible, at the highest margin, to the next person in the queue.

That has never been my version.

I have been told that being this invested in clients is not scalable. That I should focus on volume, not depth. That the future of travel is digital and automated and frictionless.

And maybe some of that is true. But I have also been on the phone at midnight helping a couple rebook after a hurricane. I have hand-selected a room upgrade for a client celebrating her first trip after cancer treatment. I have researched a destination for six hours because a client mentioned, in passing, that they have always dreamed of seeing it.

Those moments are not scalable. They are also the reason clients come back. And the reason they send their friends.

Relationship-driven travel planning is not a limitation. It is a competitive advantage — and more importantly, it is just the right way to treat people.

“I am not in the business of booking trips. I am in the business of making moments matter.”
